The Word for World is Forest
30.07.20 Wollaton Park, Nottingham
Borrowing its title from Ursula K. Le Guin’s 1972 science fiction novel, The Word for World is Forest will be a series of paintings located in the woodlands of Wollaton Park, Nottingham. The event will act as a homage to forests and an attempt to inhabit the space of an in-between, the interval between ‘worlds’- physically and virtually – an attempt to open up a space for these transformations. These are earthy paintings in artificial times. The nature that culture uses to create a second nature, a mimesis, a bodily knowledge, arising from alterity, a means of ‘contact’ between distant beings, in different realms, different time zones. This is a place that we can escape into and many dark spaces. I grew up next to this forest. It is protected... It’s like a room, where reality is left behind and the rules of the cosmos can sometimes bend.
